What is foster parenting?

Foster parenting is the welcoming and looking after of a child in one's home. The child has to live away from their original parents for various reasons, such as neglect or parental illness.

How can I become a foster parent?

To become a foster parent a visit and examination of your home will be conducted and you must also take part in a course which will explain the rules for foster parenting and more. For more details, contact the help desk of your local prefectural children's advice center.

What kind of foster parent categories are there?

There are 3 categories. "Care giver foster parents" where foster parents look after children until their original parents can look after them. "Adoptive foster parents" where foster parents wish to adopt the child. "Relative foster parents" where the child is looked after by a third degree relative. |

Can foreign married couples become foster parents or adopt? Even if we have a child of our own, can we become foster parents?

It is possible for foreign couples to become foster parents, however, conditions apply, for a consultation go to your local children's advice center. It is also possible for parents with their own children to become foster parents.
