About the Gifu International Center (GIC)

The Gifu International Center was established in March 1989 as a community-based center for international exchange.
With the aim of actualizing a multicultural society in which Japanese people and foreign residents live together and respect each other’s cultures and ways of thinking, we carry out activities based on the following three pillars.

Multicultural community development

We are working to create an environment in which foreign residents can become active members of the local community by providing various consultation services for foreign residents, support for life planning in Japan, and information in multiple languages, etc.

  • Gifu Prefectural Consultation Center for Foreign Residents (multilingual consultation services).
  • Life planning support for foreign residents and young people’s career counseling support.
  • Putting in place an environment for Japanese language education  etc.

Creating an environment for the promotion of internationalism in the region

We transmit information to foreign residents and relevant organizations, and providing them with a place for their activities. In addition, we are working to promote bilateral exchanges on a non-governmental level in conjunction with the prefecture’s international exchange promotion measures.

  • Foreign language courses, courses introducing other cultures.
  • International exchange events.
  • Networking projects, for example with international students  etc.

Facilitating the activities of NGOs and volunteer groups

We support the independent initiatives of prefectural residents and private organizations and strive to invigorate their activities through assisting with projects implemented by private organizations and training volunteers to respond to widespread and urgent issues such as medical treatment and disasters, etc.

  • Implementing volunteer registration and training (foreign language study, disasters, Japanese language support/ guidance, homestays).
  • Mediation and training of volunteer medical interpreters.
  • International exchange and multiculturalism promotion assistance projects  etc.
