Geography and Climate

The alpine regions of Mt. Norikura, Mt. Mitake and Okuhodaka-dake in Hida in the northern part of Gifu prefecture all measure over 3000m above sea level. On the other hand, the rich plains in the Mino region in southern Gifu are renowned for the 3 Kiso Rivers (Kiso Sansen), namely the Kiso, the Ibi and the Nagara. The Nagara-gawa in particular has been named as one of the 100 most beautiful clear streams in Japan. Truly blessed with diverse natural beauty, Gifu Prefecture has also been called ‘Hizan Nosui’, which translates as ‘Hida’s mountains and Mino’s waters’. Gifu Prefecture ranges from 0 to 3000 meters in altitude, and the climate is also distinguished by region, with an average temperature of 15.1℃ in Gifu City to the south and 10.4℃ in Takayama City to the north. As a result of this diverse geography and climate, Gifu is inhabited by various animal and plant species.
