Location and Population

Gifu is located almost exactly in the center of the Japanese archipelago, with Mugi-cho in Mugi-gun as the population center of gravity (if all the people in Japan, bearing the same weight, were centered in one point in Japan). Surrounded by 7 other prefectures, and one of few to border no coastline, Gifu, with an area of 10,596km2, is the 7th largest prefecture in Japan. In 1983 the population surpassed 2 million people, and has continued to increase, and as of 2000 the population stands at 2,100,687 (1,022,139 male and 1,085,548 females). This consists of 1.7% of Japan's entire population and ranks 18th in the country for population size. The population density of Gifu Prefecture at 199.9 people per km2 is approximately 1/27th that of Tokyo.
