The Origin of Gifu

The “Gi” (岐) in Gifu originates from a place in China called Gizan from where Wen Wang, founder of the Zhou Dynasty, peacefully ruled all of China for over 800 years.
The “Fu” (阜) originates from a place in China called Kyokufu, birthplace of the philosopher Confucius. Gifu therefore translates as a place that has a burning desire for peace and learning. Rumour has it that Oda Nobunaga changed the area near Gifu castle from Inoguchi village to Gifu town and spread this name all over Japan as a base point from which he hoped to unify all of Japan. This is one of many theories as to the origins of Gifu, including some which state that the name Gifu was in use before Oda Nobunaga’s reign.
